    Housing together

Hi all, this is a purely hypothetical question. I think it is probably a stupid question but am going to put it out there anyway. It is a bad idea to try and house a pair of tegus in a 6x3 foot enclosure right? I was just sitting here entertaining ideas about perhaps getting a female to go...

    Tegu growth rate

Jasper was almost 4 feet long at a year. They can grow FAST. But he didnt hibernate either. If they hibernate they will grow slower theoretically. We found ourselved building a new cage 6 months before we thought we would have to LOL. Carole

    Weird Hibernation?

Hi, my tegu, Jasper has never hibernated. Last Sept. he decided to stop eating and I thought he would hibernate. Until one day in early October when I put my hand in to get the water dish out and he came FLYING out of his hide like he was starving. Offered food and that was it. An eating machine...

    BLUE TEGU'S HAVE FINALLY HATCHED!!!!!!

The kinked one will probably make a great pet for someone so long as they don't breed it. I have a mad kinked ball python here I got from a breeder that would have put him down if I didnt take him. He eats, poops, etc and could be fine. He is way kinkier than the kinked tegu and he makes a good...

    Cypress warning

Hi, I dont think it matters where you get it (for landscaping). They chop up trees willy nilly with all sorts of stuff getting mixed in. Im sure the standards for mulch are not high which makes it cheaper than the pet store stuff. Carole

    Cypress warning

Hi all, just a warning to check over your cypress mulch before letting your tegu or any other animal loose on it. I found a very odd object in a bag from Agway today. It was a black plastic thing with 4 metal sharp prongs sticking out of it. I was like WHAT? But its not meant for animal bedding...

    At a loss

Hi, he doesnt look too teeny. Maybe a little small but slow growth is good. You say he is in his second hibernation? That would account for less growth right there. Not a bad thing. As long as he is healthy that is what matters. My Jasper didnt hibernate and went the other way to mutant huge in...

    I need some help....

Hi, I thought mine was going to hibernate this year. He went off food in Sept. so I just stopped feeding him but he kept basking. I went in there mid Oct. to change his water and he came FLYING out of this hide like he was after something. I went and got some rats and WHAM he ate like crazy and...

    Cat food???

Hi, I would not feed cat food to anything but cats. It is specifically formulated for cats. And I also wouldnt feed Iams to anything. That said, if your tegu is going into hibernation, ie. not eating, hiding and not basking, I would not try and feed it anything. It will eat loads in the spring...

    Fruitflies?

Hi all, does anyone know how to get rid of what I think are fruitflies in cypress bedding? Getting rid of the cypress would seem to be the logical choice but it is very new cypress. I think the fruitflies started across the room in my redfoot's cage because of the fruit and veggie material that...

    Stupid question about shedding

Hi all, I did something really stupid and I dont know if it will have any lasting effects. Jasper was shedding a big piece on his back. It looked free and clear so I tugged at it a little. Well he walked away at the same time and some of the skin that I dont think was ready to go let go. It...

Activity level when out of cage

Yikes, I have heard about the flinging of the mouse parts which is why I feed Jasper in the cage out of his dish. If he wants to get mouse parts on the interior of the cage thats fine. I dont think I could stomach cleaning mouse bits off the living room carpet and ceiling. LOL! Carole

Activity level when out of cage

Hey thanks guys. Sounds like this is about normal then. Good. I will continue to just let him out to run around and lick everything in his path. My guess is that when they slow down towards the end maybe its cause their core temperature has dropped down to where they might just go take a nap...
