Buy a book on monitors. That's the best advice anyone can give you, if you're truly interested in them. They aren't normal lizards. They are very cunning, and very flighty, which makes for a crazy combination that can be tough to deal with. You don't want a nile monitor. Start off with a smaller one like an ackie (ridgetailed monitor). They're all the fun of a larger monitor all rolled up in a nice neat little package. If you're dead set on a bigger one, dumeril's or a blackthroat would be decent, but not a best first choice.

1. buy this book: <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.amazon.com/Giant-Lizards-Definitive-Breeding-Monitors/dp/0793805813/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1258161893&sr=8-2" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.amazon.com/Giant-Lizards-Def ... 893&sr=8-2</a><!-- m -->

2. read it all the way through

3. if you still want a nile monitor, make sure you have lots of gauze and tape around so you can hold yourself together while you're waiting for the ambulance.

no i have not, have you?

i had a V albigularis and he was like a big puppy, i had 2 columbian tegus that were similarly laid back, i have an arg b&w now that eats from my hand... i certainly believe that the individual personality of a given reptile is going to have a broad range but, here's the thing: when knowledgeable varanid keepers agree unanimously that a nile is a BAD IDEA, i listen.

do what you want, my advice wasn't a joke. that book will give you a decent idea of what you're looking at in terms of husbandry and attitude no matter what sp you choose. the gauze will come in handy if you decide to handle you nile as an adult(i still have scars from my albig and he LIKED me)

good luck

incidentally, there is a list of most if not all known varanids on this page: <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monitor_lizard" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monitor_lizard</a><!-- m -->

most are unavailable in the hobby unfortunately

You all seem to treat monitors like tegu's. Monitors are nothing alike. Give the animals respect. That book you reconmended wont have right info. It has to many different species in it. Monitors alone have the most lizards out of all the other family's of lizards.

i left a response on your other post. if you really dont know what to get, and have been considering a water monitor, like i said, id get a water monitor if you have room for it. make sure you try your best to get a captive bred one, dont be afraid to spend the extra cash. also, if you can find a lace monitor in the US, let me know even. because i tried..
