Hi and welcome!

Can you tell us a little more about the tegus? Do you know their ages? Do you have any pictures of them?

Can you tell us about your setup so that we can help you more?

Hi,
I was told that the tegus are 3 years old. They are both aprox. 36 inches long, the female is more slender than the male. I don't have any pics at this time( I'm at work). Obviously, I don't have experience with tegus but they look pretty good to me, no sucken eyes or mouth rot or any other injuries. The guy we bought them from said they ate a lof of cat food but did not mention when they ate last and I did not think to ask at the time. They came to us in a large rubber maid it is aprox. 48 inches buy 18 inches. He told us the reason he was selling them was that he moved to an appartment and was not able to bring their inclosure with him because it was too large to move. He said they were in the rubber maid for about a week. Honestly I don't know if I believe anything he told us. I know he sells other reptiles, I don't really think they were his pets, I think he was just selling them.

We are in the process of building them an inclosure (8x3x3). In the mean time we have put them in a terrarium which I know is much too small (48 X12) because I was worried that they were cold and wanted to provide them with UVA/UVB.

I have a question. I have held a few tegus and not one has droped their tail. Is this a myth that they can drop their tails like geckos.

Thanks

No it is not a myth. Tegu's can absolutely drop their tails. It usually takes alot more for them to drop their tails then just holding them.
