So I was looking into finding a new herp vet today, i haven't found one in San Diego i have been alittle lax on finding one becuase i have been very lucky with my lizards so far. One of the ones i talked to was extreamly knowledgeable, he new alot about tegus and lizards in general he will admit that he does not do alot with turtles and snakes but is up front about it. His exam fees are not bad at all and his reviews locally are not bad.

We got to chatting and he said that the older lizards most likly will not need a check up unless i want to get a base line on them and to bring the new guy in once i felt he was adjusted well. I figured it would be smart to get a baseline on my two tegus before anything bad happens. He than asked a question i never thought about before, have you microchipped your tegus.

I knew then do it with hi end herps and zoo collections, he said its the same price as for dogs for the lizards. Now i have done microchipping to dogs and cats and that a huge needle. I just want to see what is other peoples thought about microchipping their tegus or reptiles in general. There could be a time in a few years where i will have to board my animals and i guess having them chipped would help elminate any ownership issues.

Again any thoughts on this.

I don`t see a need for it tho if you feel a need do it ...

Micro chipping to my mind is more for if the government finds that you dumped your tegu out they can trace it back to you ...

If your tegu was stolen I would think a picture would prove enough to prove ownership ...

The only scenario I can come up with that it would be beneficial to have your animal micro chipped is at best remote ....

All of mine and my relatives dogs are chipped, Dino my tegu was chipped as well. If the others lived long enough and or were big enough they would have been chipped too.

Since I let Dino free roam in the back yard there was always that chance that he could've escaped. Which he did but he just went to the front door. Even then that was after I had him chipped.

Sometimes you read about peoples reps being found in the papers or you see it on the news. For what ever reason if it happens to me I want mine back. I'm responsible enough to own up to the fact that it's mine,.. pay the fine if there's one and get it back.

But chips only work if they are found and taken some where to be scanned. If someone finds them and decides to keep them then your pretty much Sol. Unless you happen to see the pet some where out in public, it escapes again or is brought in to be scanned for what ever reason. A lot of pets look a like and sometimes pics just don't do it and you'll need more proof.

These are pics of the day I found him at my front door. My dog Powder was in the back yard flipping out,.. whining and running back and fourth between the back door and the gate. I had let him out like usual while I was fixing his food which this was also the first day I gave him a whole rabbit. After checking the backyard I checked inside the house to make sure he hadn't walked in and I missed him. I heard scratching at the front door and opened it to find him looking up at me.

So I put him back out in the yard to see how he got out and I got these pics.

These last 2 are of him walking up to the front door and going back into the house.

In no way shape or form do I regret having any of mine chipped. Powder went missing for almost 6mths before I got him back. When I went to pic him up even though they called me with his info they still asked for more proof.

The only reptile I have microchipped is my Burmese python and that is because it is required by law. It's not a bad idea if you are worried about escape.
