ingesting substrate bad?

So my tegu has taken to eating his food rather aggressively, and consequently he ate a couple small woodchips today. is this bad? can they digest them? i was worried it might make him constipated or cut his throat on the way down or something.

As long as it is only a small amount and not a recurring thing, he should pass it no problem. Hydration is also very important in moving things along.

From what I read it might be safer to feed outside the enclosure.
