They both show tremendous variation; I think on average Salvator rufescens is the larger, however I've seen photos of Salvator merianae that were positively astounding that I've never seen S.rufescens even approach (comparable to Komodo dragon size.....). Before hobbyists got involved and muddied up names, one of the common names for S.merianae in the science literature was the "Giant Tegu", so it's possible this is based upon actual historical size observations and may reflect which species is the larger (in some populations....).
