My parent's dog Chewy ( a huge Royal Standard Poodle) is having siezures and it having major issues. He's ok for a while and then on the ground laying down with blood red eyes and their all sunken in. He looks to have ear mites and is on medication for them and is also on broad spectrum AB's (amox). My dad is like me, a man's man, would never cry, but everytime someone even mentions chewy he can't hold it in. He didn't even cry when his dad died and it's KILLING me to hear him on the phone like that... If anyone has any suggestions or questions that could better diagnose I would appreciate it. My dad has slept on the couch in their living room for 5 days with the dog because he is afraid he'll lose him without saying goodbye...

I really hate to hear that, but my knowlage on dog meds are limited. I will keep Chewy and your dad in my prayers. I hope we can find someone who can help.

Thanks Dorton. Chewy has had short seizures for years, but they are few and very far between and go away with a few minutes. He was put on amox to try to treat his condition, I will let my mom know about amox causing seizures. He's running a slight fever and has an elevated white blood count which would indicate an infection, just no idea which one.

Update. Mom REEMED the vet a new A-hole after talking to another vet about Amox. Is currently at the new vet getting new meds and trying to do more tests. Last vet did a white count which proves nothing, except that the dog has a problem. I just bought my parents a Pet Memory Box because their anniversary is Feb 10. I pray Chewy makes it out ok, he's about 10 years old, and they just want some more time. Ugh.. this is the hardest part about owning pets.

Hey there,
I have a few questions regarding your dog, you had said that you have been taking him to the vets, have you concidered taking him to a Specialist ? (if you havent already)
It just seems that "regular" vets such as General Practice dr's cant really give you proper answers when it comes to major medical ordeals as specialists can. I have many years under my belt as being an animal nurse (vet tech) and can only give you the advice of seeking a specialists help for your dog. Sounds like he or she may need a Neurologists help. It may be pricey but sure is worth it.
And also, has your dr's prescribed Vallium to take home in case of a seizure? That would also be a good thing to have at home (with consent of a dr. that is :p )
Its really hard to give advice on that type of situation ..
But that is the best I can do :(
Hope your doggy will be OK . good luck ,

No, I just asked my mother if they prescribed anything for his seizures and she said no. I think they're taking him to a specialist in stockton. My mom thinks its a neurological problem as well, but she's scared to find a brain tumor or a clot, lord knows the clot could slip from wherever it is and hit the brain and it's game over. SHe's a little frantic. Hopefully it goes well.

Well... I grew up with a poodle. A country home with a fancy city dog. I laughed at him, played with him, and learned to love him. It's only now that I wish I hadn't given him so much crap. He was so great to all of us, and I guess my dad and I have something in common, a few tears for Chewy.

Chewy died this afternoon on the way to the vet. My only thanks, is that he went quiet and comfortable. I will always love you Chewman...
Rest in Peace my good friend.
