Alright, this goes to all owners that have or have had Rhino iguanas (or all cyclura species for that matter) in their care for a while.
I've had my Rhino since last Tuesday and have pretty much left him alone so far. I only go into his enclosure to add food and water. The first day he tried everything in his power to escape. He jumped on one of the vents to see if he can fit through there. He also jumped on the backdrop in each corner as well thinking he can get out. When all of this didn't work, he retreated into his hide and didn't come out for a whole day. He started acting normal soon after that. I guess he figured he couldn't escape. lol.
The enclosure is in my livingroom so there's a lot of traffic. When he's basking, he never freaks or goes into his hide when we approach him. If I get real close all he does is stare at me and bob & **** his head. I love it when he does that! When I slide the glass door open he kinda flinches but doesn't run off. I have used some tongs to place some food right next to him and he gobbles them right up. He LOVES those Mazuri tortoise bites.
I have read that many of you like to soak their rhino in the tub every day or every other day. Do you feel that was essential in the taming process? Just yesterday I slowly tried putting my hand close to him and almost touched him til he bolted. If he doesn't allow me to touch him yet I can't imagine how long it will take to catch him. On top of that, how freaked out might he be? I'm scared to grab him and freak him out to the point where next time I slide the glass door he remembers and starts bolting in his hide. What do you guys think?
