I have a 5 month old red tegu, he hasn't come out for two days and I'm sure I'm doing to new mom thing, but will he brumate? And if/when he does, what will it look like? Is it too soon? I live in SWFL and his basking temp is 117. Thank you for any input!
If and the extent to which he will brumate varies among species, individuals, and over time within an individual.
What to look out for: Complete or nearly complete disinterest in food beginning in late summer or fall. Stays hidden in its cool hide, not ever or rarely coming out to bask.
Is it possible that he's come out when you're not around to see? You could smooth out the substrate and check for tracks later.
That's a great idea! I'm a bit of a homebody with my children but there are times when I'm gone, I will try the smoothing out substrate method. I appreciate it!
