ok so a friend of mine brought a leapard gecko a while ago and has had for a year or two maby and for some odd reason the gecko has stopped eating and he stop putting the regular amount of food he normally puts in there and so i said to him hey whats wrong with ur gecko and he said to me it stopped eating and he doesnt know y so i said hey take it to a vet and what he told me really pissed me off he

he said he dont care because it only cost him 40 dollers and he can easily get another one if he wants. now some body tell that doesnt piss u off :mad :mad :mad :mad :mad i honestly dont even want to talk to him

and the sad thing is he doesnt just have a gecko he has a ball python and a couple of turtle and some dogs and i worry for them but unfortunately i cant do anything but tell he needs to take good care of his pets

God... That's rediculous. This is the kind of crap you see at petco and petsmart... Animals treated as nothing more than merchandise. A few years ago I went to petco (I was desperate to get some rats on short notice) and I saw a leopard gecko walking around on the floor. The poor guy had been stepped on and was bleeding from the vent and mouth. Plus his head was split open. So I started yelling at the closest employee for ignoring the gecko instead of picking him up off the floor and at least euthanizing the poor little guy. So the frigging employee just throws the gecko in the trash can the second I look the other direction. I HATE people who mistreat animals!!!!!!!!!

support your local pet shops and breeders. petco and pets mart has put many pet shops out of business. they sell cheap imports excluding rhacodactylus geckos. cheap pet store mainstrays . but both petco and pets smart helped fight HR 669. my advice buy from breeders like Bobby that way you know your gettin healthy and not pet shop junk.

I can't count the number of half-dead herps I've nursed back to health that I got from mother/siblings/friends of knuckleheads that lost interest in their animals after all their buddies had seen them. I eventually had to just quit. It got too disgusting, and loosing one (it happens) got too frustrating.
It's a shame, but nothing short of an outright ban on exotics will stop it. You can try to educate folks all you want but some people just don't care.

I prefer going straight to a reputable breeder. I've seen very few pet shops, even "family owned" ones that I'd trust, and I've lived and herped all over the US.

Hey, I work at Petco. Not all of them are that bad. I personally tell people all the time the words that every retail giant hates... No. I just had a lady come in yesterday, who has used a CFL bulb she bought from Home Depot, for her Beardie. She said that on the package it said it had UVB. Doubtful, even if it did not nearly enough. Her beardie had MBD, his back legs had stopped working. Where did she get it from? A little mom and pop store in town. Who told her that would be okay. They can be just as bad, or worse than big market chains. I'm not defending Petco, some of the policies they have a five year old could have made better decisions. But don't paint every employee of that company as an animal abuser. I have walked in to more mom and pop stores that were just appalling than I have in to bigger chains. And that's not just because I work at Petco. Personally I would love to start a pet store. Sorry for the long reply. It just gets me when people generalize.

first of all mr. tank if that was my friend he wouldn't of been after that second that sob would be picking the memories of his nose off the floor and cornking the petco employee i probably would have taken his tail around back but most people are a touch more "civilized" than myself but the best thing to do is go to the local paper about stuff like that and get it out there how these companies act. and as herper9 said they are not all bad i have seen some nice stores of a larger size both here in atl. and up in va. when i was stationed there so there can be no generalization just action.
