taming my new baby red

I've had my baby red for almost three weeks now and it is still a little sketchy. I've been trying to take it slow and just reach my hand in his enclosure when he is out of his hide and slowly pet him. But he is still very weary of me so if I could get any suggestions I would really appreciate it

I'm not really well with tegus I just got a red too. But they say to pick them up from his belly slowly and gentle and then lift him up a bit. Like not so high up from the enclosure so he can walk off your hand. What I'm doing today is taking him to a bath room and letting him walk around and me ignoring. There's a forum here that tells you all about it good luck.

You seem to be doing it right, its just a very slow process. You shouldn't be taking him out of his hide or chasing him around the enclosure with your hand. Taking it slow is the best thing you can do, don't try to force anything on him. It's good he is a little weary of you, its natural for them to be that way when they're so small and you're so big lol. Just keep at it, you can also try spending time near the enclosure, watching tv, reading, computer usage, homework, whatever. That too can help him get used to your presence. I had guru's enclosure in the living room when I first got him, I think it really helped because there were always dogs and people right outside of the glass.
For holding, some people suggest just sitting with your hand under his belly at first then gradually working towards actually lifting him. Katoellazaro has great suggestions. The bathroom trick works really well but you need to make sure that there aren't ANY holes he could get into. Tegus have gotten stuck in cabinets or gotten into walls. It also might be a good idea to put a towel behind the door, they can fit through the smallest of gaps/holes.
