Stressful Enviroments

I had to make some more adjustments to my cage today concerning the uvb bulb placement. Anyways I had to use a loud saw where the cage was located so I took Yoshi out of his cage and put him in his favorite bag I keep him in when I need him out of the cage. However, this time I did not want to have him in the room with the loud saw going off so I took him upstairs and let some family members watch him and make sure he was ok. I've never had him up there before and I can only imagine how scared he was taken out of his enclosure.

I understand that now since he is so young that he shouldn't be forced to be put in those situations all the time but it needed to be done this one time. I want to be able to bring him around my family more often though and him be used to it. I have a big family and sometimes there can be 3-5 people in my house at a time. I know itll take time and patience while he gets used to it, but my question is how can I get him used to such environments and expose him to places that later on when he gets older he will be able to be calm in? Also anyone here have a tegu that is in these types of environments a lot and is calm in them?

When I had my tegu, he was always around a lot of people. I have a wife and 3 kids, so there is constantly 5 people in the house. We often had parties (adult parties and kid parties) when there were kids around, I would often take him out and let them see/pet him. He wasn't even a year old when this was going on, but was decent size 30" at least. You will just have to learn to read your tegu and know when he is in the mood to be bothered and when he isn't.

I had niles at a pet store with me ( in a pouch I made for him) on the day I got him. I have also brought him to my friend's house once.her kids petted him and he sat on her shoulder.I always watch to see how he's acting...like curious or like omg hide me! :) he's usually all for exploring and interaction.he likes to 'taste ' everyone and everything.haha.I have 4 kids...3 live w me.plus 2 dogs and other various reptiles.not a quiet house.so I believe they can do fine with active environments...I put him on the coffee table and he says hi to everyone and chooses the lap he'd like to sit on :) essentially i would just test him out here and there and watch his reaction.niles was 16 inches or so when I got him but i would think the sooner you allow him to interact with your family the better just so your home environment will at least seem familiar to him.

I'm guessing it varies with each tegu... I've had a few incidents where I've tried to step over the one of the panels that makes up my lads run, stumbled and hit the floor like a bag a spuds; he wasn't at all phased... Just looked at me like I was an idiot.

Well I hope Yoshi turns out like that. Right now I've seen him calm only once around me and I had to have everything quiet and us just alone. He huffs and hides if there's anyone else there. Hopefully he comes around and learns that nothing is here to hurt him. As soon as I get him comfortable with me picking him up and carrying him I'll start taking him to different rooms with maybe just one person. It's gonna be baby steps for me and him

How old is he?

He'll be 3 months old Nov 16 haha so I totally expect him to be like this for a while. He has made some progress, the other day he finally got curious and started crawling all over me and letting me handle him. So it shouldn't be too long before he gets used to everything I hope.

Yeah, you have plenty of time to get him to the point you want.

I don't know if this would help, but I used a denim pouch i made for niles at first.that way he could feel safe in it if he wanted to hide but could pop his head out and look around if he so chose.also i could have 'control ' over him if he became skittish because he was contained in the pouch....

Kirby is a little over 4 months old and had his first road trip this weekend I had to move my girlfriend 2 hours away and he seemed to take it well honestly he seemed to enjoy it he was in a ferret carrier that had a tough plastic mesh on the front and sides he was all about looking out the window showed no signs of stress or anything he has a cage set up there for him as well as his own free roam room and didn't mind at all when he got there his appetite was a big a ever and still is now that we are back home I'm actually glad he took the trip so well because he will be living in both places for a while lol!

Nice :) I used an old fashioned animal carrier with solid sides and a full screen front (maybe I'll post a pic later) to transport niles to a friend's for a visit.he seemed fine in it. I'm glad your tegu wasn't stressing...I too think they can actually enjoy exploring new places.it is, to me, a form of enrichment that almost any animal can benefit from
