Removing from cage and food selection

So this might have been covered but I'm looking for some advice from everyone with a decent amount of experience with tegus :)

So I just bought my first Tegu (Colombian) and I couldn't be happier with my choice, that being said, I've seen a whole bunch of different ideas about how to tame and heard a bunch of different things to feed a young tegu. I bought him/her from a reputable shop here in WA. The owner who sold him/her to me told me that i need to check on him everyday, meaning if he's burrowed I need to dig him up. Is this an okay thing to do? He's not aggressive but he does run from me when trying to pick him up (most of the time)

Now on to the second question, food. I was told (by the person who i bought him from) to only feed him Dubia roaches till he has doubled in size, but after viewing this forum I see that i can feed him other things. So what really is best to feed a young Tegu?

Thanks in advance everyone! :tegu:

Welcome. Tegu diets have been discussed over and over in these forums. Please check out older threads regarding this topic before starting a new one. It can eat a lot more than dubia roaches, that was poor advice.

Picking him up everyday is going to stress it out. Let it be for a couple weeks unless you notice a medical concern. Let it get used to its new surrounding before you start handling it. The new environment is stressful enough, handling at this time just compiles the stress it is experiencing. Expect it to hide a lot, especially at first.

Thanks for the advice. I know there is other threads regarding the topic of feeding, I've checked them out, was more so just seeing what people thought about the whole only dubia till it doubles in length.

I'll have to just let him be for a while then, thanks again for the advice.
