What part of CA are you in? I don't have any ventilation on my cage other than about 1/8" gap around the doors and when I open the cage to feed or clean.
I have very little ventilation. I use eco-earth substrate,it holds moisture, and I use a 3 gallon sprayer to mist cages daily and my humidity levels are great.
I gave up too. They don't have shed issues so I must be doing something right. I've got a large soaking dish and I mist the enclosure every day.
I recently got an older rubbermaid tub they out grew and cut a hole into the side, I put some mulch in it and Guru now sleeps in there. It seems to be holding humidity pretty well.
