Our Corallus hortulanus/tree boas *pictures*

In March I got a tree boa from a museum after participating in a "roadshow" with some of my reptiles. My bf and I had talked a lot about getting C. hortulanus (it began with gtp vs hortulanus - gtp lost the "battle")

These wonderful boas are among our favorite snakes, so my bf bought another two in April and a month ago he bought yet another... We now have 2,2 Corallus hortulanus - 1,0 gardenphase + 1,0 mixed colors + 0,1 yellow + 0,1 orange.

And here is a picture of one of the enclosures - it is not all done in this pic since we put more branches in the top. Our gardenphase sure enjoys this enclosure...

they are great and i love your tank setup... these guys have been at the past few expos we have gone to and i have considered getting one but i hold back due to their lizard eating diet which would prove pretty pricey in my area what do you feed and are they as nippy as the ones i've encountered? a nippy juvenile is no problem its a nippy adult i'm wary of lol

WOW! nice snakes!

i dont know too much about snakes. how big are they? love the colors.

I fell in love the first time I saw them, so I have to agree - nice snakes ;)

It is actually not a huge snake. As adults they are only aprox. 5 ft +/- and they are quite slim built as most tree dwellers are.

About the colors - they are actually all natural, no morphs here. Tree boas are polymorphic which means that even two gardenphase adults can get e.g. yellow hatchlings. Various colors can be present in hatchlings from the very same clutch.

Hehe. Nippy... Love the term. Lol. We normally call them Ã?¢ââ??¬Ã?â??Heat seeking missile (skin) punchersÃ?¢ââ??¬Ã?Â. They can be very nippy Ã?¢ââ??‰â?¬Å? they are known to be. But our were only nippy when they first moved in here. Once they settled in their enclosures they calmed down.

We can put our hands into the enclosures without any problems Ã?¢ââ??‰â?¬Å? as long as we do not touch them, that is. They are very curious so their heads sometimes follow our hands around as we clean, dush etc. We do avoid putting our hands near them at night, though, since they are so much more nippy when itÃ?¢ââ??‰â??¢s dark ;)

But yes, a bite from an adult can be very painful due to the veeeery long teeth Ã?¢ââ??‰â?¬Å? I sure wouldnÃ?¢ââ??‰â??¢t want such long teeth in my fingers, but my bf has been bitten and he says it isnÃ?¢ââ??‰â??¢t even painful. Our orange female bit him in slow motion Ã?¢ââ??‰â?¬Å? so slowly that I was actually acting as a speaker from she picked out her Ã?¢ââ??¬Ã?â??spotÃ?¢ââ??¬Ã? till the teeth went all the way into his arm. Lol.

But I have been taught a few things on how to calm them down and avoid being bitten Ã?¢ââ??‰â?¬Å? always nice to have nerdy friends with 40+ yr experience ;)

In the wild they mainly feed on bats and birds Ã?¢ââ??‰â?¬Å? and occationally lizards. But we just feed ours mice. They do well on mice so it is not that big a problem to feed them. When they get bigger they can get chicks and other small birds, too.

I'd rather be bitten by all our hortulanus at the same time than by one adult blood python! Blood pythons are the only snakes with a firm spine (or whatever it is called in English) so their bites come with so much power that it is quite a blow to take?

As a (region) board member in the Nordic Herp Association I go to the expos, too - mainly to represent the Association, talk to people about reptiles and how to keep them and whatever people might want to talk about. We have display enclosures in which we have some of our private reptiles - you know, nice reptiles do get some attention ;)

One guy have brought his adult blood python a couple of times for our display and that is one huuuuge snake! Not that it is that long, but this species sure do produce some weight :D
If you can handle a blood python I think you are capable of handling a hortulanus ;)

We make our own mice - they live in my bf's kitchen. Hehe. We have to since it would be more than pricey if we were to buy all our food. We have aprox. 50 animals, so we prefer breeding most of their food ourselves - too bad we both live in apartments 'cause then I can't grow our own fruits, veggies etc. Hehe.

I will be looking forward to seeing some pictures of your new snake(s) when you have visited the expo ;)

PS: I am almost sure that my boyfriend would prefer nippy over heat seeking missile any day - especially if it was one of those days with long teeth into his arm. LOL
