Hey everyone, I just got my little guy a few days ago.
So far he seems somewhat calm. When he isnt actively basking (i.e., has a high body temperature) I can touch him a little, just a very gentle stroke without him freaking out... he will crawl away a bit and if I touch to much he will jerk a little but nothing serious.
Yesterday I went to feed him and was able to place my hand next to him on the ground... when he would walk away (he did this calmly the entire time) I placed my hand next to him again. He would turn his head often and smell my hand but then wander off in the other direction.
At one point I was able to put my hand under his chin and get his front feet on my open hand, I was hoping he would walk onto my hand so I could lift him into a feeding bin but he hopped off.
I felt that if I just went to pick him up he may ... or may not freak out. Not wanting to chance it I just placed the plate of food in his cage and he ate while looking at me.
He is about 12" and 1 month old.
My question is this:
Ive read you arent supposed to grab them or restrain them in any way, but if they wont be calm when you pick them up ... how are you supposed to follow any of the advice that gets given out so often - i.e. take them into an empty enclosed room and let them room while ignoring them, use a feeding bin daily so they get used to being handled, etc, etc.
If they wont let you pick them up without bolting... and you arent supposed to restrain them ... how the hell are you supposed to get them to a feeding bin or enclosed room? lol.
My guy seems pretty calm for the most part... just slightly cautious of me and doesnt really like being touched. As mentioned I can touch his tail a little or on his back but he walks off.. most of the time casually but a few times hes jerked away. Not freaking out mind you, but moves quicker about an inch or two away from me then resumes normal slow movement.
Advice? Suggestions??
For clarification... I think I might be able to get him on my hand calmly enough.. but walking to the bathroom with him without restraining him? I seriously doubt it ... Im guessing Im misunderstanding everyone.
Ill probably just try to get him on my hand then hold on to him as calmly as I can and take him to the bathroom and/or feeding bin.
