Hi everyone, I bought a baby chacoanXnormal B&W tegu from a reptile show in the uk. When I was talking to the seller I asked where the tegu was bred and he said it was uk bred and micro chipped (which I could see it had been) when I asked if I could have a copy of the chip paperwork he insisted I didn't need (but really I wanted a copy).
Anyway I got the chip number read and it starts will 939 which I understand is a manufactures code, so I looked up the code and it's a European code (based in France and Italy) so I'm trying to find out which country the tegu was chipped in.. Which is hard work!! Lol
Here comes the question.. If the tegu was imported from either a eu country or American, do I need to have a copy of the import paperwork?

Sorry for the stupid question but it's been bugging me for weeks.
Thanks

Oh and another thing, when I microchip is implanted is it automatically registered with the original owner or does the new owner have to do it.
Thanks again

i would say that if you can get the paper work it is probably a good idea (you would want documenttation if you had a car shipped from America right?) as far as the chip goes if it is the same as the chips they place into all other animals then yes you need to re-register it into your name. if you dont and your lizard gets lost when they check that chip they will return it to the person you just bought it from. you need the information to get ahold of whatever database maintains the record for that chip (company name, chip number, location implanted) and up date it to your information.

For legality you do not need the paper work at least from an international stand point. All tegus are CITES II which means an import permit is needed to bring them into a country but after that they can be bought and sold in that country with no further paper work. Now each country is different but I don't remember the UK having other laws on the issues. The paper work could help if there was ever a dispute however, in the US CITES violations for an animal that is commonally breed in captivity is extreamly rare and normally happens on importation not on private owners.

As for the mircochip, in Euro they are done for two reason. One is to show were it originated. This is important as tegus are protected, the mircochip shows that the animal is legal ie either imported with the right paperwork or breed in the country. The second is for lost pet recovery. You will need to re-register the chip with the company. Your best pet is to have a vet get the company contact and give a call in; if its a big enough company they may even have a website where you can do that.

I hope this helped out a little bit.

Hi guys thank you for replying.
Well I got in contact with the chip manufacturer (real trace) and they told me that, that chip was sold to Argentina :O and gave me the email address of the company that bought it.
So I have emailed them to ask of they have any record of with vet that implanted it.
So he/she could be an argentine import, I'm so bloody annoyed at myself at the min.
I've contacted the guy I bought the animal off and I'm waiting to see IF he tells me the truth this time about where this tegu came from.
I'm gonna contact CITES to see of they have any import/export docs with that microchip number on it.
Can but try I guess :(

And before anyone says anything I know I'm a muppet!! Lol

With crosses its hard to prove sometimes, we all have to go on the word of breeders and dealer.

Good luck on figuring this all out.

I would be pretty doubtful it will have chacoan in it in the uk. A lot of sellers say this if they are white nosed just to help push sales. I could be wrong but have heard this so many times.

To be honest I didn't even know what a chacoan was. And made my decision purely on the tegu it's self.
I'm just trying to work out if I should have his/hers microchip paperwork and an import doc for it IF it turns out to be imported.
