One of my adult female cresties (who was a rescue) has always had MBD. It greatly affected her mobility. We had recently noticed that she had begun to climb really high on the glass the passed few days.
A few times I had to assist her in getting back down.
My husband checked her this evening and it appeared that she had taken a fall and has a rectal prolapse (as a result?).
Anyway, she's really lethargic, I soaked her and cleaned her up.
Let me continue by saying that her passing has been a long time coming ever since we rescued her.

My husband decided that we should just put her in her home, and let her pass comfortably...as we don't believe she will make it through the night.
I gave her a few kisses and put her in.
She is with her best friend Peanut. Who has cuddled with her since day one.

She will be so much happier where she's going... as I would assume shell have fully functional limbs again.

We love her dearly..

Yeah, that's the first thing I had thought about. It seems to have been such a grim few days around here...
But we've been ready for this. For her own good, this is actually ok with us. We just don't have the heart to put her down.

I put one of my crested geckos down today, via the'dry ice chamber '. She was initially a rescue with advanced MBD, But had shown significant signs of rehabilitation, even though MBD is not reversible. We had been noticing the passed few days that she had been climbing the glass pretty high, and often needed our assistance to get back down. Last night my husband had checked on them and noticed that Buttercup had taken an ugly fall and her coloring was none that we've ever seen before. She looked very ill, almost lifeless. Upon my husband taking her out for me to examine her, I quickly noticed that she had a SEVERE rectal prolapse. It being at night, my husband suggested that after I cleaned her up and gave her a few kisses, that we put her back in her home to allow her to pass comfortably. And so we did. Much to my surprise, she was very much alive this morning. I called the herp vet and they proceeded to tell me that they were booked up until Monday. I didn't see the sense in letting her suffer as she crawled around with her insides dragging beneath her. I posted a question on iherp answers and received a few responses on how to humanely put her down using the dry ice chamber method. We then decided that for her, this was best. She fought the effects of MBD everyday... it was time to put her at rest. Buttercup was very special for one of two reasons.... 1. She was my very first crested gecko. 2. She was also my very first reptile =0) ......Buttercup's amazing demeanor and her personality inspired us to move beyond boundaries into multiple different species. Buttercup is the reason why we're now reptile enthusiasts and always will be. I love you girl..you opened a whole new world to us andand you've changed our lives for the better =0)

I agree. A memorial thread would be great.

I am sorry for your loss but at the same time I am glad that you were able to help her on her way out. Losing a companion is never easy. It takes a special person to be willing to take in anything special needs and make them happy/comfortable.

Thanks guys.... she really was special. I don't look at what I did as 'killing her ' ..as her spirit had already died. I feel like I put her to rest, allowed her to finally relax after all of the struggle. It sucks that she went out like that... instead of dying off at some ridiculous old age. But that was the hand she was dealt by her previous owner, and her and I made the best of it!
Yes, I kissed my deceased gecko as I put her into a small container for burial. That shows that these guys are NOT novelties, they're actual loved ones =0)

You didn't kill her, you set her free. I'm sorry you had to do it yourself; I doubt I'd have the emotional composure to do it. I have buried each and every reptile I have ever owned. We have a small memorial garden/cemetery with a plaque where all my scaly friends (plus one tarantula and a frog) are laid to rest. Love doesn't discriminate by species. For some people it's dogs, others snakes, and then there's the one guy obsessed with millipedes. We all love our animals/

We actually own the home my husband grew up in... so all of his childhood pets are buried in the same area on te side of the house. We just add to it.
