Just goy my 2 tegu's in tuesday... a little help is need but very much appreciated

My tegus only 2months old just got them in. I built a 8x4x4 and when I go to get them they go on the other side or hurry up and go down the other way I don't chase them because I don't want them to see me as a predator, but how can I get them if they keep doing that? One was under the dirt and one was on top so I got in and just was sitting playing in my phone, the Tegu that was on top of the dirt I got in the cage on the same side just opposite corner, well when I got to scoop him he runs then he kind approaches me from my foot but he backs off and comes back to his original spot where he was when I got in and got close but not too much so I tried to pick him up 3x and each time I got same result . I stayed in for about 20mins ..then I just put one of my shirts in their and let him be... Any advice anyone cam leave thanks.

at first, with my hatchling, i tried the "let them come to you" mentality, no chasing. but my schedule is slowly getting things in that don't let me sit for hours trying to trick him to get onto my hands. when i found him outside of his hide, i would remove the hide preemptively then go for him, but to this day he sends me on a monty python style chase around the cage, hissing and whipping, occasionally biting. but then he's fine once he comes out. he's a pain sometimes, but in my situation, i don't have much of a choice other than to disturb him in his hide and chase him around the cage.

would love and alternative, but this is where I'm at right now. doesn't seem to me more scared of me in general though.

first off congrats on the new gu's! I would section off the cage as they are still small and do not require such a large enclosure at this point, that should help as they will not have as much space to run.

remove all obstacles or things they can hide in except for their one hide or house. place a basking light on the opposite side and get them use to its location, preferably in a corner. early in the morning they will be trying to bask but cant cuz you will leave the light off. this is when you make your move. their body temp will be low and metabolism will be slow so they will be more lethargic and less fleeting. put your hand between them and their one hide spot. dont go after them like a predator but corner them a little bit. my tegu betelgeuse, only had for 5 days now and have made great progress with would not even let me get close to him, he would run off in his hide before i even got close to his enclosure. I gave him a couple days to get use to where the light was and turned it off a little early at night so he would want to warm up early the next morning. all attempts during day were complete fails. first attempt using this method i pet him for about 30 seconds before he scampered away. second attempt i was able to pick him, feed him and gave him a bath where we really bonded.

also on a side note. im sure i sound like a crazy nut job or weirdo for saying this but i swear if freakin worked! i was in the tub with betelgeuse (my baby giant extreme) and he was huffing and puffing like crazy, he looked like he was gonna have an asthma attack. he only did this when i moved my hand close, it scared me so much i didnt even try and touch him. instead (this is the weird part) i started to do the tongue thing like they do lol i spent 5 minutes pretending to "smell" things around the tub and then moved my hand over incredibly slow and i mean SLOW!! his eyes got all big and looked at me sideways and crawled up on my hand. kept licking and eventually got face to face and he wasnt afraid. i put him down and let him crawl off me and then put my foot next to him. I did the tongue thing a bunch more along with lightly putting water on him with my hand and he climbed on my foot and up my leg where he fell asleep. hes made 180 degree turn by doing that.

the smelly t shirt in his hide is a great idea too.

it might sound totally crazy but they are supposedly highly intelligent. with this intelligence isnt it possible they can learn to relate to you in some way such as this tongue thing. many primates mimic people they see in an attempt to communicate. cant hurt to try, just dont go tell people like i did lol

I think the "smelly" shirt thing only works minimally, unless u are actually always that "smelly". No sense getting him used to stink when u smell like roses. I prefer to use a glove. Get him used to that, being on it and basking on it.

Yes, i totally agree. i dont mean like an dirty sweaty shirt, i just mean one that has been worn for several days and smells like you. thank you for correcting me

u can take and do many teqniqes but it all comes down to you need time for you and your tegu to bond....the key is time
