Is my Tegu OK??

Ive had my tegu for about 10 months, she is a black and white Argentine i named KILLER! she couldnt be more than maybe a year old if that. I rescued her from a younger boy who had no idea what he was doing w the poor thing. His reason for getting rid of her was that she never came out of the dirt in the tank. When I got her she seemed fine, I had her in a 20 gal tank w a mixed substrate of cypress mulch jungle earth and some sphagnum moss. I would take her out of the tank for regularly feeding of the usual tegu diet, pinkies, little meatballs, fruits and eggs.

after a while I noticed the hiding.

I then switched her to a 75 gal tank. now shes still kinda small about the size of my hand body length, but i figured she would grow into the large tank.

I created this underground tunnel w a hide box under the dirt. I cut out holes so you can actually see into the hide box. the hide maintains its own temperature and humidity at about 78-90 degrees. she seems really comfortable just hanging out in there all day. I have 2 heat lamps one 75w the other 100w that's only for daytime and a exo terra coil UVB bulb a few months old. the substrate is still the cypress mulch jungle earth and some sphagnum moss. she has a large water bowl for soaking as well.

but she never ever comes out of the hide. and now i haven't seen her eat anything but a scrap of egg for at least a few months!

I tried to leave her alone I thought maybe she was hibernating, when i take her out I always handle her for a bit make sure she warms up and is moving around to eat.

am I doing something wrong?! how do I get this thing to eat !! I feel like force feeding may be the next step! the only positive thing i can say is that she has pooped, on me especially but i noticed it in the tank as well!

Please help any suggestions would be great! I love this lil girl and I want her to grow up to be a cuddly monster!

What is the basking temp and how are you checking temps?
I would also get rid of the coil bulb and get something like a reptisun 10.0 strip light for uvb. Some people use mercury vapor bulbs but I don't so I can't really say anything about those..

Also now is the time for hibernating so if she's a healthy weight maybe leaving her alone for now would be best..

thanks so much ! im gonna switch over the UVB bulbs andtry that out, the basking temp im not totally sure about It varies from 70-80 , i have one of those digital thermometers that has a probe attached so you can actually see what temp the substrate is and stuff. Im worried about making the tank too hot and cooking her! im going to try some different wattage out maybe heating the whole thing up will coax her out of her cave !

is it normal to have a tegu that just does not like to be out in the open? Other owners that I know all have very active tegus!

You NEED to have a basking spot of at least 100. 110 is better, they need the high heat to digest their food. I would recommend getting a PowerSun MVB. If her total length is the size of your hand, she is WAY undersize. Post some pics of the tegu and the enclosure.

They stated that the Tegus BODY was.the size of their hand. Which still makes it small for the estimated age. Mine is just over 4 months and the body is just a tad longer than my palm

What makes you thin Tiffany's tegu is undersized? Maybe Tiffany has really huge hands.

I would recoment a powersun or magaray. They nead a high uvb output. And if this animal has mbd / growing problem... It neads it even more. Things like reprisun or reptiglo are not good... Most normal bulbs give more uvb than this uvb bulbs.

It kind of sounds like the tegu is hybernating. My Zilla last year went to sleep from november untill late march.

Yeah my yearling has been down since November, but every two weeks or so he gets up and gets a drink of water and bask for about an hour then hits the hay:p

Also...niles is in full hibernation now. I believe waking them up and warming now is bad because you don't want that tail reserve to go down and starve him...
