irresponsible owner (long sad story)

im just venting about irresponsible owners!!! i have one in particular im going to talk about now... hes a friend/ part time co- worker. his main job keeps him super busy, which is y i dont understand why he has ANY pets at all...especially tegus. hes had 3, two babies (blk and white) and 1 almost full grown red adult female. as of yesterday he only has the adult left.

so the story begins with him having too many animals in his apt, his land lord found out and made him move them ALL out thus his reptiles came to live at work (petstore). he must have been thinking that sense his pets where at work that we would care for them along with our normal daily duties...wrong! after a few months i noticed that he wasnt coming around as much, i started to check on his reptiles... and secretly fed them. a few more months past and i noticed that his 2 baby tegus (at this time i didnt kno diddly squat about tegus) havent grown at all! they were so skinny! at this point they were about 6 months old. so me and another co worked decided to start getting very hands on... unfortunately it was too late and we lost one baby shortly after. we started to get on the owners ass but he did nothing so my co-worker just took the last baby home to save it. boy he was doing good! eatting and getting better.... weeks pass.... the owner wanted his baby back so my co-worker brought it back. we found it dead yesterday in the carry case that he brought it in.... the owner set it on the floor behind our display case and left it.

so today i checked on the adult. she was soooo cold. her small ass cage is on the floor, her heat bulb wasnt even hot enough to hurt when i touched it. i found out she has been eating just rats...and that no one can remember the last time he fed her. looks like she has a shed stuck on her and now shes super mean (used to b puppy dog tame) idk what to do about the adult, ive talking to the owner and he blows me off like always. i cant take her, the pet store owner wont sell her (i kno i kno but i would do it without telling him!!), the pet store owner also wont give her a proper set up cuz he has too much stuff already. its been a year! how much longer can she live like that!?

i got my tegu, elmo, while all this was goin on. at 4 months old she was twice the size of the 7 month old blk and whites he had. they were a year old when they died... they looked like 3 month old babies still!! they never ate anything but crickets, never had a light, and was kept at room temp! it just bothers me so much! i love my elmo wit all my heart, she a family member now and always will be. i couldnt imagine forgetting about her and letting her die people make me sick!.... i dont kno if i should really call his guy a "friend"

thanks, sorry i kno this is long...im done lol

You can tell a lot about a person's character by the way they treat their animals.

pet shop isnt too bad, they are barely able to keep thier door open these days so they decrease the amount of animals they have so they can care for what the currently have. the deal wit the "firends" animals was for like 2 months.... its been a year. what is the petstore suppose to do? feed and house them for free forever? yes i dont agree with the petstore as far as some decision on the "friends" animals but what can i do? ive talked him into selling some of the guys stuff and they forced him to take the snakes out of there (he had like 15 or so) im just worried about the adult tegu :( his savanna died, his rhino is on its last leg... like i said the store is trying to stay open... must less worried about this guys reptiles that are currently stored there for free... but this problem im trying to work on. the situation sucks!!

Thats a sad story, those poor lizards. I find that most pet stores dont treat their lizards right, and completely abuse them. As for your friend, This is what I would do. I would confront him. Sit him down and talk to him seriously. Sell him that he sux as an owner, and that your going to take over for his last pet, and that he doesnt have any choice in the matter. I would make him admit that he was a bad owner, and his pet needs help. And just take the tegu home without permission if I have to. f he phisicaly refuses, then I would call animal care control (not sure what its called, the cops for pets) and peta on him.

I wouldn't get PETA involved. They are just bad news for everyone these days. I do agree with confronting your friend. Just tell him that you are helping him out and that you can't handle watching these animals die. And that your main concern is for the animals.

It sounds like a lot of animals are suffering because of this guy. End it now by calling your local animal control. Report to them everything you have seen. Neglect is ABUSE! Reptiles dont need to die just because he got lazy and didnt feel like taking care of them any longer now that they have got to be a burden, since he got them taken out of his apartment and now he has to put more effort into visiting all the places his collection is stored.

thats a good point! i mean i havnt even told u about the other animals, the others that have died, the ones that have escaped etc, i think his stuff is spread out at 3 or 4 different places. i just worry cuz ive seen what animal control here is like... like i said above... they dont kno a ball python from a worm. but ill try!! :)

I think if I started to notice the animals in pain and he couldn't take care of them for a year and they set in a pet store being abused in a way, I would have taking them for my self just for the safety of the animals. Well as many as I could afford to take care of. But that's just me, I have adopted so many animals from people that can't take care of there animals.... It's just sad to watch them starve and die of poor care:/

Where are you located? Things like this make me sick, I just don't understand how people can just turn a blind eye. At this point I would not consider these animals to be his anymore, although my brother the lawyer would probably disagree, I would try and find homes for them, even if it is just temporary.
