How will I know when my Tegu is comfortable ?

Hello once again everyone ,

I have had my Tegu for about a week now. I have picked him up about 3 times so far each time he backs up into the corner and eventually lets me pick him up. He even gaped at me and has only bit me once. My question is when will I know when I can just pick him up ? Also should I be trying to pick him up even if he's backing up ? I figure I eventually have to train him but I do not want to be forcing him. What are the signs of him being comfortable with me and will this just happen all of a suddden ? Thanks !

Could be now o'r never !! Teg only just about tolerates me picking him up or petting him, but we've got an understanding !! lol ill put him on my shoulders for carrying around the house, they like having their feet on something ! I think that is important ! Some are tame others are not, tried training Teg to come to me but didn't happen so had to get hold of him unfortunately, or dought very much we wouldn't be anywhere by now !! lol How old is he/she ? Teg is 6/7 months and had him since 3/4 months, good luck .... Let us know how you get on !?

Thanks Teg :)

Ive had my new Tegu for a week and he still isnt coming out of his hide when Im at home. He usually comes out right after I go to work and there is no way to coax him out when I return. SO I just say his name a few times every day when i get home trying to get him used to my voice/presence.

I made the most progress with Gwangi when he reached almost 4 months old. He was kind of skittish till about then. Now he is nearing 8 months and he is totally tame and not afraid of anything.

Good to know Dubya. I kinda leave him alone one day and try and pet him the others. I'm going to try and leave him alone as far as picking him up until he comes to me. Right now he backs up into a corner if I try to put my hand next to him. Then as I get closer sometimes he lets me pet him and sometimes he jumps which makes me jump haha. It's frustrating ! I know it will be rewarding in the end . Will I know he is used to me if he walks up to me and starts to show interest in me ? So far I'm almost 2 weeks into having him. Improvements are he sometimes lets me pet him without getting jumpy, most of the time he's jumpy. He also no longer freaks out when I open his cage and move stuff around him only when I get close to him. He bit me once in the very beginning but hasn't tried since.

Yoshi was exactly the same as that. I stayed by his cage a lot and just played games on my phone so he saw me but I wasn't scaring him. After about a month I would open the door to his cage he would come up to it and walk across it and start to go off the edge but I put my hand there and held him. Just takes time

My tegu just crawls all over me, but once he starts exploring, he becomes an unstoppable force. But a lot of the time he will just chill on me while I'm watching tv.
