Glittery Urine?

So this is a really odd question - Is the liquid urine produced by tegus supposed to look like it contains glitter? Also is there any point at which I should worry about them producing too much urine? There seems to be no reference as to what is normal for tegus.

Thanks!

Thanks - I'll give her a call. I figured it would be best to check here first and see if it is normal or not. None of the species I've kept prior produce liquid with their urates so I have no frame of reference for what is normal.

You will be surprised the amount of fluid that a lizard can hold. I had a caiman lizard about 3 ft produce a man sized piss puddle all over the counter at a pet store.

What kind of substrate was the tegu on at the time you noticed this? Vermiculite may cause a glitter effect in the urine.

Ditto ^ ^ ^ substrate, my thoughts exactly. Plus it wouldn't hurt to take a urine sample in to a vet to find out exactly what it is and if something else may be causing it.

That was my first thought but I'm using standard soil, no vermiculite or anything there.

There's a possibility that the urates are reforming into guanine crystals. What exactly this would mean, I'm unsure. Could be early signs of gout, might also be nothing. I would advise a check up by a qualified veterinarian to eliminate possibilities.
