My wife purchased Diego for me last June from our local PETCO. I had never seen a tegu prior to this but have had many lizards over the years. Well, Diego was in hibernation mode back when we got him and after ELEVEN months, he just finally woke up. He'd been hiding under his cyprus mulch since last June. I was wondering if he was sick but midway through last week, I looked in his cage to discover him on his rock under the heat lamp. He's been coming out ever since. Of course, his tail is thin from such a long hibernation but he's been eating like a champ since coming out.
The other plus in all this is that we had suspected that Diego may have been wild caught (not sure where PETCO gets their specimens) and I was worried his cycle would always be off track compared to Freida, our larger Tegu that we adopted last July. Well, now it looks like the two cycles have finally caught up to each other. Anyway, just thought it was interesting that a Tegu could hibernate SO long.
