Did he eat it?

My tegu is a juvenile. I had him outside with me on his leash on my shoulder. All of a sudden he bit my ear. I got him off and noticed immediately my earring was gone. It's a nice size stud diamond. Not a secondly later I started examining his mouth for swallowing and no signs of him trying to swallow anything. Nothing. My daughter was with me and neither her nor I saw anything on the ground. Here's the thing I have screw on backs and I wouldn't think from his bite he could just pull it out. I have tested my other ear by yanking and pulling and every kind of come off yank test to see if if it was possible he yanked it and swallowed it. Tegus usually make a distinct swallow action but he didn't. And the back is missing too so I really think it came off somewhere else and he mistook my lobe for a lil piece of meat because the earring wasn't there.. I fed him afterwards with no signs of distress. Still no signs of distress a couple hours later. Just in case tho what kinds of signs of distress should I look out for. I know everyone's going to tell me to rush him to the vet. But I'm not going to waste 600$ for an xray if he didn't even eat it unless I have to. If he starts showing signs obviously I will. But what signs should I be looking for.
