So someone posted this to reddit and I thought it was an awesome project. Figured I'd post it here as I'm guessing some non-cat creatures would definitely love it.

My tegu is way too small to free roam now but I am going to steal the hell out of this idea once he gets bigger.

I wish I had the motivation and money to do something like that. Right now decorating the cage is getting to be a pain getting it just right

It's nice, but it's nothing more than a bed with a heater. It's more simple tu buy a dog bed and to fill it with a heat mat. The real problem is the heat dissipation in the winter.

No one is denying that it is a bit excessive - but it is a bit more than just a heated bed, it only turns on when an animal is in it, and has built in shutoff timers / thermostat. I'd assume that at that range the heating would be more radiant than anything so I don't think it would have too much issue in the winter. That, and the fact that it could be adapted to supply UV as well means that it could be a pretty nice resting spot for a free roaming tegu. Again, not saying it is necessary - just a cool project.

Why not get a K&H small animal or cat heated pad, put it in an insulated cat bed like the plush cube type, and wire it with a pressure sensitive switch. they are only a few watts and do not get hot enough to burn. Or how about this? Mount the pad on a platform with a weak spring on each corner, then place it over another platform with one contact on each platform facing each other. the weight of the tegu will push the contacts together and turn it on. You get the general idea. you could even put the heater or MVB over the tegu and use the sprung platform as a switch. Simpler is better.

Yeah wasn't going to implement it the exact same way - but if it is worth doing it is worth overdoing.
