    Aggression

Do you have any handling tips for an aggressive tegu? This is the first day that he's been aggressive, so I assume he will continue the behavior. I can never get him out of the cage because he violently squirms. I don't want him to hurt himself, so I just put him back down.. I've found that he...

    Aggression

So I've had Zynithar for about 4 months. I got him as a hatchling. He's never been one to be aggressive, but today, when my mother tried to feed him (I was gone) he lunged at her with what she claimed was 'complete malice'. I don't know what would cause him to suddenly act like this. I've never...

    Advice?

Just know that some tegus can have an attitude. Mine is very skittish, and requires constant attention to try and gain his trust. Patience is keen with these lizards. Don't get discouraged if it doesn't want to be held by you; it'll come around. Cypress mulch is fine to use for tegus.

    Chef needs feeding advice

Sounds like you've got this on lockdown. I've noticed that my tegu has preferences on what he eats, so don't be discouraged if he doesn't go for one prepared meal.

    Gu force handling

See, if I even try to pet my gu, he starts to breathe extremely heavily, and attempts to run away, so I just leave my hand in the cage. He mostly just watches it. I don't know why he isn't warming up...

    Tegu questions.

I cannot answer your question regarding sexing, but I use 2 bulbs, a 100 watt basking bulb and a UVB bulb to mimic sunlight. Just beware..... I've heard rumors about coil UVB bulbs damaging a tegus eyes.

I dug him out, and he is watching me closely

Also, when I pick him up, he tries to take off like he's on the ground.

    Handling Tips Needed

I appreciate the time guys! He stays away from the basking light unless he just got done eating, and I know that that's for digestive purposes. I've never had a tegu be this shy. He will breath exceptionally deep when I even put my hand in the cage, which I know is from stress. I just put my...

    Handling Tips Needed

I've had my Argentine Black & White tegu for about a month now. He just lost his green coloration so I can assume that he's a monthling? In previous experiences with him, I would put my hand in the cage to lightly pet him, but he just wouldn't have it. He'd run away and dig. The furthest I've...

    Is Eating wood chips normal?

You should monitor him closely. Ingestion of substrate can lead to impaction.

    Tegu Behavior

My tegu, Zynithar, is actually very shy, and burrows most of the day. He only comes out to eat, get water, and go back into his burrow.

    General questions

Well I'm glad to hear that you're considering a tegu. As for your questions, to answer the first question, 1) Tegus actually spend a majority of their time underground, so the loose substrate is a must. Bark-like substrates or coconut husk is acceptable. 2) While some tegus will eat every day, I...
