The entire time that Scary has lived with us, he has been a calm and gentle guy.
Now at two years and nine months he whips his tail hard and claws wildly leaving bloody scratches on any not well covered by clothes.
At first it only happened when it was time to go back into his habitat...
My grandson's Tegu is getting new digs soon.
With a width of 8 feet, a depth of 4 feet and a ceiling 6.5 feet high, what is the best way to provide correct temperatures and the right amount of UVB? Also, can we buy light bulbs or tubes from a hardware store or must they be made for reptiles? TY
This is apparently new information. Many warm blooded animals could not survive if the temperature was too low. Our Scary Animal doesn't like the recommended temps in his habitat. He prefers about 90° at the warmest. I am going by the discovery the biologists made. We learn new things constantly...
When our yearling Tegu is heading for brumation he also will eat and immediately burrow in substrate. We leave the lights on for a few hours after he has gone under ground. I spoke to a herpetologist at a nearby university. He said keep the temperature warm to insure that digestion is possible...
Our Scary Animal likes ground Turkey but loves chicken livers. We have to cut them small enough for him to swallow. The advantage with the Turkey is that we can mix greens or fruit in with the meat and he doesn't notice. He is not a fan of fruit or vegetables.
Our little (not so small anymore) loves exploring the house. His tendency to follow at my heels makes me a bit nervous. I have to be very careful not to step on his toes as he crowds me. The only time he objects to being picked up is when he knows it is time to return to his habitat. He is adorable!
Biologists studying Tegu recently discovered that Tegus are warm blooded. I have read this in three separate
Not according to biologists from three universities who did an intensive study on Tegus. The result was that they were shocked to find that Tegus are warm blooded. They have the ability...
Every single thing I needed for little Scary's habitat was under half the cost at Lowes than at a pet store RW or online. The items are also better quality and last! Now my question. What is best to feed a year old Tegu? Any tips on getting him to eat fruit or veggies? Right now I sneak them in...
After a year of buying humidifiers, lighting, timers, and humidity/temperature gauges I became frustrated with the lack of quality in these items. I had purchased them online and from pet stores. Apparently I am an idiot! All the same equipment is available at building supply or hardware stores...
I was looking for information online in an effort to learn if our juvey tegu Scary Animal may have adapted to a reduced temperature in his habitat. The answer was absolutely.
While searching I discovered several studies stating that Black and White Tegu have been found to be warm blooded...
