After a couple of days he was eating normal again. He is spending a little more time in hiding though, maybe eating a little less I am not sure but only time will tell if he is getting ready to hibernate. I would miss him but whatever happens happens. :)
The problems arise when the tank get stagnant water. As in humidity builds up and sits in the soil, if the tank had somewhere for the water to go when it built up everything would likely sort itself out. A high humidity grass would do better but if its not imperative stick with what you have and...
