FAQ Video for new tegu owners

The MacGyver guy on youtube just put out this video a few days ago which I thought was really good so I wanted to share with all the new gu owners:

Tips on how to give my Tegu oral medication?

Get some salmon, cut it into chunks, and then use the syringe to squirt it into the fish pieces. Thats how I administered painkillers to my gu after his surgery and it worked out fine. I think fish is relatively easy to digest also.

tegu and beardie? and handling questions

Tegus just don't like being held. They like being in control of their own movements. They would much rather crawl around on you than sit still in your hand. WRT the first part, no its not weird. I've had tegus and beardies that got along fine before. Its not something I would recommend...

should I be worried about his weight?

Yeah, he just isn't full. If he had parasites like worms, his belly would still appear full, he just wouldn't be getting the nutrients because the worms were getting it, and he would be slowly losing weight over time. So either he just needs more food, or he used to be super fat (unlikely...

    Large enclosure

The "too big a cage" / "starter cage" theories are completely wrong, and are only perpetrated by people trying to sell hatchlings to customers who can't properly care for them. Tegus are generally much more active when they are smaller, and this is the time they really need to have room to run...

    Reg tegu

Most tegus, every very friendly ones, generally don't like being held... they much prefer sitting beside you/trying to go under you. Can you get him out of the cage so that he can walk around in a safe room and get used to being near you?

Starting enclosure size for a hatchling

I just ran across this post in /r/reptiles which talks about spacial considerations for juveniles VS adults in general: http://www.reddit.com/r/reptiles/comments/2wqctu/a_nice_journal_article_about_captive_reptile/

    tegus and toddlers

I wouldn't leave any young kids and a tegu together unsupervised... any number of horrible accidents could occur as simply as the child falling down on the tegu and breaking its arm or something. That being said, I don't see any problem with having a tegu and a toddler as long as they are only...

Starting enclosure size for a hatchling

I'm not really a fan of using smaller enclosures for baby tegus... I'd recommend you go all out and build as big as possible what you want for him as an adult. The reason being that tegus are very active when they are young... thats when they really want to run around and explore, and you don't...

    Tegu Roadtrip

It really depends on what your tegu is accustomed to, and where you are going. If you tegu spends most of the time in a cage, the changes will probably freak her out. If you are going somewhere cold, like a skiing trip, definitely not a good idea. That being said, if you are going somewhere...

    Tail Amputation

I think I'm just going to leave the stitches in and let it heal as the vet prescribed. After doing some more research I'm not sure it would grow back anyway even if left to heal naturally.

    Tail Amputation

Unfortunately I don't know of any other reptile vets in the area who's opinions I would trust any more, and a lot (including the one I used) are closed on Sundays. I'm scheduled to take him back in tomorrow morning for bandage removal (not sure why this requires a vet visit either) and I'm...
