Aside from ackies, what other smaller monitors do you keep? What type of caging do you use? Do you breed them?

I know there's a lot of monitor keepers out there and Josh created this separate forum for these guys, so let's keep it alive!

I know about savannahs and waters and niles and crocs and argus, but what about flavis and other less than huge monitors?

I have been looking into getting a V. tristis tristis and the V. acanthurus I have mentioned in other threads as well. There is a breeder called Price Animal Co. http://www.priceanimal.com/ and they cb smaller varanus breeding like the V. acanthurus and the V. tristis tristis. They also do beaded lizards and gila's. The only thing that they dont do from what I gather is set up shipping, I think it's the buyers responsibility to set that up. I am also interested to hear from other monitor owners.

NorCalAl, I see your ackies are doing well:)

No Dana! Someone has a pair of tri-crosses for sale. From the ad, looks like gouldis, flavis and ? Anyone familiar with these?
Next for me is a trio of red ackies. I'm going to look for a pair or trio of blue trees, also.
I've learned a little in the past few months and I'm going to sell my GTP. I like lizards a LOT more than snakes (and so does the GF)!!!

I love those tristis! Those tri crosses will be a handful compared to the other species you have kept. Manageability goes up when you increase size to the larger species. Also the Flavs are a more much alert moving monitor than some of the smaller ones.

Maro - what ARE tri-crosses? How big do they get? I'm not really interested, right now, in getting anything bigger than my ackies. The blue trees are about the same size, so I'm counting them as small.

And flavs and gouldis...where can I find more definitive info? I'm searching!!!

NorCalAl,

Those Tri Crosses are most likely going to end up the size of the Flavi's or Goulds or Argus. These are big intelligent monitors that you need some experience with. They need lots of room to roam and are BIG DIGGERS. Fast as Lightning:) when they want to be.
