Hello!

I’m an experienced herp keeper but I’m new to tegus. Im doing my due diligence before I make my purchase and am hoping some folks can point me in the direction of great resources and trusted breeders!

Thanks in advance!

I got pretty lucky with my Tegu, there's a captive bred reptile dealer that specializes mostly in lizard. You can check your area to see if theres any reptile specific stores or exotics. I would avoid the big name stores like Petsmart. Im assuming youre likely from the US. Ive also heard good things about underground reptiles and such

I’ve checked and there’s not really any exotic stores in my area that I’d be willing to buy from. I’m seriously considering purchasing from Rose City Reptiles. However, I’ve never had an animal shipped and I know tegus can sometimes drop their tails so I’m nervous about shipping. Any experience with having a reptile shipped?

I just saw Rose cities the other day. I kinda sad I hadn't heard about them sooner. Those morphs are amazing. I don't personally have experience, but I have friends that did it and have seen over a dozen unboxings. They're are probably plenty of people here who had their Tegus shipped. Shipping usually isn't too bad, they ship over night.

Also from I know Tegu's can't willingly drop their tails, their bones have to hit a stress point and actually break.

That does make me feel better. I always get nervous about lizards who can drop tails. I may honestly end up just booking a flight out there and seeing if Rose City would be willing to let me pick mine out in person and then just rent a car and drive back East with the little nugget. That’s probably overkill but I just want to ensure my new baby is safe and healthy.
