Hello! I'm pretty new to tegu care, and I bought from a prior tegu owner, who... Gave me very vague descriptions of the actual animal. I feel like they purchased him not knowing how big he was going to get, and wanted to get rid of him once they found out. I wasn't given a specific age (just that he was hatched "around last august" and that he was brumated sometime before I purchased him).

But thankfully! He seems happy and healthy and energetic, with no health issues or shedding complications to speak of, aside from a tiny bit missing off the tip of his tail.

The only thing is, I'm not entirely sure what breed he is. The previous owner claimed he was a red, but I've had him for a while now, and hes shed his skin many times, but still doesnt appear to be taking on any sort of red colour.

I'm having a hard time finding any information on what age they tend to gain their colour, or if it's different depending on individual.

That being said, any extra tips or advice would be much appreciated.

ps: his name is big boss

Hi NBH,

He could be a red. Under a year old. He looks bright-eyed and scaly-tailed.

he was about 6 months old when I got him so he colors were already muted. He Refused to eat much for the first year I had him, then winter came and he slept from October to April, when he woke up he began eating like a pig, he has tripled his size just about getting to the size of my largest female in just 6 months. he does not care for human contact and even after all this time huffs and puffs every time I get near. Im hoping when he wakes up in April he has a better disposition lol
