If you use cypress mulch, you can make it 6 inches thick, use a good flat piece of rock, set it on the opposite end from the basking source, I always put the heat on one end. and the hide at the other. Place smaller stones under the larger one, that way he can burrow, under the rock and the mulch, BUT BE SURE HE CANNOT MOVE THE ROCKS. I use large enough rocks so he cannot move them, you don't want him to get crushed, or pinned. This makes a great hide, and it is cheap to build.
Also the reason to put the heat source on one end, is so the hide will be a place to cool down. If you put your heat in the middle it will be the same temp all over the enclosure.
