Taipei - Surgeons reattached a Taiwanese zookeeper's forearm on Thursday after a 200kg Nile crocodile chomped it off and colleagues recovered the limb from the reptile's mouth, an official said.

The male crocodile severed Chang Po-yu's forearm on Wednesday at the Shaoshan Zoo in the southern city of Kaohsiung when the veterinarian tried to retrieve a tranquiliser dart from the reptile's hide so he could give it medication, zoo officials said.

The forearm was reattached following seven hours of surgery on Thursday.

The Liberty Times newspaper said Chang failed to notice that the crocodile was not fully anesthetised when he stuck his arm through an iron rail to medicate it.

The 17-year-old reptile is one of a pair of Nile crocodiles kept by the Kaohsiung zoo.

Known as a man-eater because of its voracious nature, the crocodile is listed as an endangered species, and is rapidly disappearing from its native African habitat.

As Chang was rushed to the hospital on Wednesday, a zoo worker shot two bullets at the crocodile's neck to retrieve the forearm, said Chen Po-tsun, a zoo official.

"The crocodile was unharmed as we didn't find any bullet holes on its hide," Chen said. "It probably was shocked and opened its mouth to let go of the limb."

Chen said the zoo purchased the crocodile 10 years ago from a local resident who had kept it as a pet.

Wow.....at first I thought the pic was photo shopped. It's amazing how dangerous these creatures can be.

I have seen some fairly graphic vids involving crocs...it's too bad though. People get a bad idea of crocs....and in turn, of other lizards.
Almost any animal can bite you...heck even our kittens can bite and scratch us.
Think about it this way....if we weren't stickin our limbs and sometimes even heads in crocs mouths and doing tricks, we probably get bitten, now would we?
Unless of course you happen to accidentally trip over one on your daily walk...
Nevertheless, I think I'll stick to my....more docile pets...like tegus :)

Ouch! I couldn't imagine the pain from having a limb twisted off from a croc bite. Never can be too safe when working around large
dangerous animals.

The croc was doing what crocs do but that guy was IMO abusing the croc. That guy knew what could happen.
Very Sad because now I fear that croc is in for more abuse.

Here's the FOX Blast news video. I disagree with their boots statement obviously. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=doB6qL931S4&NR=1

But anyway... about that video Bobby... Really? I mean come on, really? I think I was watching a croc being attacked and defending himself from a mentally deficient human being. I know all of you sympathyze with the animal (thank God you aren't idiots), but there really are people who watch it and say, "Oh my God! His arm!" pfft. Screw that guy. If I bang a stick on the ground, hit my tegus in the head, they'd better bite my hand off or I would be deeply disappointed. Haha Merry Christmas for his wife. I'd have love to seen that hospital scene. Thai lady screaming at her retarded husband, hitting him with a croc-skin purse just to add salt to the wound. Lol.
