What to do if tegu bites u

I agree with the recommendation to clean with Betadine. If you don’t have that on hand, rinse it or let it bleed a little to wash out germs, then use sterile gauze to stop the bleeding with pressure, apply Polysporin or Neosporin (antibiotic gel) and put a bandage (“Band-Aid” type) on. This is...

    Nail trimming

I have real slate squares (from flooring store), not tiles, on the floor of Foley’s cage. Just walking on the slate wears his nails down so they aren’t sharp. I haven’t had to clip his nails since he was a baby (he’s 11 years old now!). Much better than struggling to clip them.

Spartacus is 1 1/2 years old now!

I agree, blue tegus are a real sweetheart pet. Foley watches tv with us too sometimes. Of all the various snakes, lizards and frogs we've had, our tegu has been the most rewarding of all. He likes being held, cuddled, snuggled, whatever attention he gets. Foley is 11 years old (I've had him...

    Saphee Growth Report and Discussion.

Give her a big dubia roach to chase down and play with. Foley catches it, throws it up in the air, waits for it to recover from the fall, and then chases it down again and repeats... until he finally decides just to eat the darn thing. (I know, that's cruel, but it is a game to him!) Or give...

New owner, rescued tegu.. any info much appreciated

It's been a week now since you posted, I think you should be handling him at least a few times a week, if not more. It depends on his reaction to you when you go to pick him up. If he's standoffish, then don't pick him up, but if he's OK with it (or better yet, comes to you!) then pick him up...

    Rex loves his towel

We leave a towel in Foley's cage for him to burrow into if he feels like it. On a warm evening, he'll lay on top of it instead. It's definitely a comforting thing (like a security blanket!) and we always put one in his carrier when we take him to the vet. Keeps him calm!

    Update and new head scars/scuff?

Curious for an update? Have you had someone let him out on days you can't be there?

    Sleeping with Tegu !?

Tegus can be trained to use a kitty litter box for that, and they're reasonably clean animals so will use the proper receptacle rather than your bed :p I see others have already made this suggestion but I'll leave my comment anyway, I don't get to post too often! I haven't slept with Foley...

    Do Tegus need to brumate?

My tegu has never brumated, he's always been awake (and hungry) during the winter months. He has a heat and light controlled environment; we don't chill him down to make him brumate. He's over 10 years old now, and I don't think lack of brumation has materially affected him....

Overweight Tegus, the hows, the risks and how to avoid it.

Just for comparison, here’s a tegu in the wild — my son was in Buenos Aires, Argentina for a tournament and took this photo for his tegu-loving mom

Where are you allowed to have Tegus?

They were/are illegal in Hawaii: https://hdoa.hawaii.gov/blog/news-releases/illegal-tegu-lizard-found-in-waianae/ (2011) And now illegal in Florida: https://www.yoursun.com/arcadia/news/tegus-and-green-iguanas-now-banned-in-florida/article_5ac37d34-bb0b-11ea-8758-3fdae3ea8445.html (2020)...

    Cheap blue tegus - Trustworthy?

These may be wild-caught tegus, like the ones sold on Tegus Only (Rodney Irwin) https://www.tegusonly.com/ (but the pictures on their site are clutches of babies, so maybe not! Plus they have "marshmallow" blue tegus for slightly more, $250) If you do get a blue tegu from them, please let us...

How to introduce my 10 month old to my cats and dogs

Interesting.... neither of my cats were interested at all in watching the tegu in his cage. I haven't socialized them, but had Foley on the sofa one time and the cat came over, looked at him, and walked away....

Tegu keeps scratching everything INCLUDING ME

Hope you keep her nails trimmed so they aren't sharp! I have thin slates (real slate sheets, not tiles that look like slate) on the floor of Foley's cage, to keep his nails trimmed when he walks on them. No problem with sharp claws for me :)

    Tegu hates enclosure

You're so lucky you caught the smoking embers before they became a fire. Glad everyone was safe! I suggest putting the lamp on an external (to cage) lamp stand and weight the base down so it's less likely to get knocked over and burn again....
