    Grow Tents and Tegu Attention

There are a couple threads on this forum where people show how they modified their grow tents to have virtually one whole side be a visible window by replacing the fabric with heavy duty vinyl. I did this for my girl and can watch her daily through the modified window

    Is my guy too fat???

Personally I would try to cut out the hamburger in particular if you can as one of the fatty meats and try to feed him more whole prey like mice and chicken/quail chicks. The whole prey could also probably help the sheds be a bit smoother but yes, reds are the most finnicky with shedding. A tegu...

    Is my guy too fat???

Personally I think yes, your gu is a bit on the heavy side. They will get 'puffy' and chubby looking in the belly after a meal, but you can really see the chunk in the thigh portion of his legs in that photo. What's the diet/exercise like for him?

    New Tegu, Is this normal?

This is quite normal if its only been 3 or 4 days, they can take a week or two to settle once you bring them home. If it fits comfortably in a 40 gallon, then its got to still be young so no surprise that its skittish around you. Aside from the adjustment period it can just take a lot of time...

Are these burns? How serious is this?

Sounds like you might need to change your setup then if that's the case. Moving the light up higher won't fix the concentration problem that caused the burn and your tegu likely won't get sufficient heat if you do, they should be able to warm their whole body on their basking spot, hence keepers...

    Vacation Advice

I would not leave her alone, truthfully I would not leave an adult alone for several days either, I'm not sure who advised that but I'm really not a fan of that advice. If your vet's office is familiar with tegus and their care I would take her there - many are not well versed in reptile care...

Are these burns? How serious is this?

I would say this is indeed a burn. Can you show your light setup? A common way that larger lizards get burned is that they only have one strong basking light, and they try to warm their whole large body by sitting directly underneath it, not understanding that this will burn them. A fix to that...

    attitude?

Settling period. Its been three days, this is normal behavior

    sooo....

Do not dig for him, pretty much ever honestly. He needs time to recover from yesterday, but tegus in general regardless of age should feel safe and secure in their burrows and I wouldn't recommend digging them out ever unless there is a reason you need to. You should leave him alone for several...

    sooo....

I mean you didn't ruin things forever but you definitely didn't get off on the right foot with a baby who is already nervous and flighty and doesn't know who you are First, don't try to handle him so early. You just brought it home, its entire environment is unfamiliar and overwhelming, give it...

Backpacks/bags to travel with Blue Tegus?

I wonder if you could use one of those bike trailers that people use with their kids, these things? Not sure if anyone has ever tried this with a gu

Wait, how do you even dispose of "old" substrate??

https://www.tegutalk.com/threads/substrate-question.20958/#post-177609 Here's a recent thread discussing how often to change substrate, I've never heard of someone doing it every three months. When you have an enclosure that holds about 1.5 tons of dirt, that just seems very excessive and...

Backpacks/bags to travel with Blue Tegus?

Perhaps you could modify a duffel bag with some mesh siding for breathability? Maybe something like that. I would test anything you're gonna do first though, when I first put my girl in a plastic bin she freaked out because she didn't like feeling walled in with no view out - same when she was...

What type of skin issue is this?

I don't think it's an issue of too wet, those look like burns to me. If they are healed, they should subside some with many sheds. I would avoid with any pet, reptile amphibian invertebrate etc, putting heat at the bottom of the enclosure. In nature creatures dig down to cool off and it tends to...

    Is My Lighting Too Much/Ideal?

18 inches should be okay especially with two of them, I have heard 12 to 15 inches before, never 12 to 13. If you can afford the solar meter you should go for one when you can, the peace of mind it'll bring is great and you'll probably keep your UV bulbs a lot longer as a result instead of...
