Pictures do her no justice. She has so much white on her and no black pigmentation. The Blacks showing up in the pictures are actually dark red in person. I'm new to the Tegu world and think I just picked up something special
Would love to talk to some experienced breeders out there to see what their thoughts are on this girl. I'm looking to either cross her with a blue or an albino to keep the high white. All comments welcomed.

I got this guy on Tuesday. I'm told he came from David Blair and that he is a grand cayman hybrid. He's about a foot and a half. Right now hes kept on a sand/soil mix. I talked to david blair and he said that it was an acceptable substrate. He hasn't eaten a whole lot yet, very very flighty. I have him in an 8x5x4'. He seems healthy, hes got a missing toe on his back foot. Clear eyes, clear vent, clear mouth, etc. Very alert. I did however notice that sometimes his mouth looks like its got a little gap at the front, I will try to get a better picture of it. I'm wondering if it could be something like MBD... I'm using a mega ray bulb, basking is 108*. I have a lower basking spot to help him decide where he needs to be. I only fed him Tuesday, I will feed him again today. I used a multivitamin as well as a calcium supplement. I don't see a lot of info on cycluras except for this site, this is my first iguana. I don't plan to feed him any animal protein.
Has anyone used 2x2's or what are some recommendations.

I know reptiles have a strong constitution and I'm hoping it just pinched him. He went on to roam around for an hour and no sign of any damage.
So far getting to know Kinabo, my Black Throat has been going great. When I got him from Riplee in early March he was about 30" and is currently 43-44" and weighs a ton or so it seems.
I have noticed that his interactions with me are very different depending on his surroundings. For example; if he is allowed to roam the reptile room, he hisses and whips when approached unless I talk to him a lot. In a smaller room like the bath room, he will crawl over me and sometimes come to rest on my legs or chest. In other words he is much less flighty, hisses less, whips less etc.
If I talk to him in his enclosure and stroke him, massage his back, rub his cheeks, he acts like he is in heaven. He will even lay his head my hand and will give a look that says, "wait I am not done" when I stop.

Interestingly, when I pick him up to take him out and carry him to where ever, He is relaxed and perfectly ok riding in my arms.

I suspect that the more I let him roam the larger room the calmer he will be in it.
Your thoughts on the matter?

I know there's a lot of monitor keepers out there and Josh created this separate forum for these guys, so let's keep it alive!

Typically how large will an Argentine tegu get? And about how long would it take for them to achieve their full growth?

My Arg tegu Jay is almost two years old now, and he doesn't seem to be nearly as large as other, younger tegus.

He's about 36 inches but to me it seems like he's so small compared to other people's tegus. Maybe I'm just bad at judging sizes through pictures, though. xD He's actually unsexed, so maybe he's actually a 'she'?

And how can I adjust him to other foods. He will eat ONLY mice. I need to get him to eat something other than meat, though, because he's having a hard time shedding, especially on the tail and back legs. His whole body is a nice whitish-gray, with his black markings, while the tail and back legs appear a yellowish tinge and are rough to the touch rather than smooth like the rest of his body. He takes a vitamins pill after every meal, and it did the trick for his first difficult shed about half a year ago, but it doesn't appear to be helping him now. He gets regular baths, but I think a quick change in diet is necessary, seeing as the last few centimeters of his poor tail has a rather large bump in it and appears about to fall off, and I'd like him to keep the rest of his tail.

I've tried waiting a few days and then offering fruits and eggs, but he doesn't take them, only rubs his face against the ground to signal he's done eating, as he does when he won't take any more mice.

~Fast answers(at least for the problem with his diet) would be much appreciated.

Also, does anyone know of a good nail-clipper brand that can be used for tegus? Jay's nails are quite long and sharp, making it quite difficult to handle him- he's very active and loves to hang onto my shoulders/chest area while I go about the house so you can see why I'd like them trimmed(I am literally covered in scratches).

So how many people have to wrangle their lizard out from under the couch on a regular basis? The last week I've had to deal with hauling a very pissed off lizard out from under the couch by the base of her tail. Yeah. She's totally not thrilled with that.

Despite the fact she's got two areas in the apartment now that are 'hers' to burrow in, a place that is 'hers' to sun in, she still decides to wedge her fat lizard butt inside the couch, right where if I sit down, she'll get squished. And no, it doesn't do any good to cover up the way she gets in there. Her and her powerful jaws of doom (see the video of her 'hauling' off the vacuum), pulled the cover off the back of the couch so she could get in there.

I suppose I should just be grateful she's not eating the cushions.
